About SSNZ

Settlement Support New Zealand consists of 18 local Settlement Support initiatives around New Zealand. These services are designed to help newcomers to NZ to access the local information that they need to support their settlement. Settlement Support New Zealand connects newcomers with existing services in local communities. 

 

Settlement Support Co-ordinator

Located in each area a settlement support coordinator is supporting the work of the Local Settlement Network, and to ensure that newcomers to NZ know where to locate the settlement information that they need. This might include something as simple as “How can I find a suitable school for my children?”; “What do I need to know about changes regarding driving in NZ”; “What can I do to find a job in my field?” or “Can you tell me how to arrange my CV to meet employers' requirements to gain an interview?” or “How do I go about acquiring recognition for my qualifications in NZ?”

Waikato Newcomers Network
is an initiative funded by Family & Community Services that aims to help newcomers to the area feel at home and start to settle into their new community. Regular informal social activities and get-togethers are run to give new migrants and newcomers from other parts of New Zealand an opportunity to meet others in a similar situation; to share ideas, experiences and to start new friendships.

WMRC-Logo-(V)Waikato Migrant Resource Centre is a Hamilton City Council community centre with a range of settlement from various agencies on site: Information and referral, English Support/Literacy classes, English Assessment, Interpreting Service, Refugee Resettlement Support, Employment support, Health Promotion, Venue Hire for ethnic and service provider organisations or groups.

Waikato Multicultural Council Inc.  The Waikato Multicultural Council provides advocacy, works with local and central government agencies to ensure that migrant and refugee communities integrate and settle effectively in New Zealand. It promotes harmony between different cultural groups.

Career Services NZ provides practical information, advice and support to help you look at all your options, plan ahead and make the job, training or career choices that are right for you – and the life you want to lead. Waikato District Health Board is the government sector organisation responsibility for contracting almost all health services that are funded through taxation. This includes general practice services, dental health, pharmacies, mental health, hospital services and community services. As well the District Health Board delivers services through its hospitals and other services that it owns. It is also responsible for ensuring that health services can be accessed by all populations, including migrants and refugees.

Rosetown Counselling Centre offers counselling to migrants and newcomers, with a focus assisting people to deal with changing circumstances through migration and related matters. Counselling may be available free; if people meet certain conditions.

Relationship Services provides affordable counselling services to couples, families and individuals. Counselling gives you the opportunity to talk about issues that are worrying, or you want to change, in a private and confidential way - helping you to make decisions and put them into action.

Citizens Advice Bureau [CAB]The Hamilton Citizens Advice Bureau [CAB] provides free, confidential, and impartial information, assistance, and referral to people in our community.  We have access to fully trained volunteers who between them, speak up to 26 different languages.  The Hamilton Citizens Advice Bureau is situated at 55 Victoria Street, Hamilton and is open Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm.

HMST-Logo

HMS Trust is a not for profit community organisation which offers a range of settlement services at the Waikato Migrant Resource and other locations. The trust also manages the community centre activities of the migrant centre. As the Lead Agency for the Hamilton Settlement Support NZ [SSNZ] initiative, the co-ordinator’s office provides a free referral and information service for newcomers to the region.

English Language Partners Waikato (Formerly ESOL Home Tutors Waikato) offer a free language service to new migrants & refugees both one-to-one in their home, or in Social English Language Groups. Daytime or evening.  We offer training for tuition to introduce our newcomers to the English language and workplace communication.

Hamilton District Community Law Centre has been established to provide free access to legal information, advice, assistance, advocacy or education for residents throughout the Waikato region who due to their personal or financial circumstances (including disability) cannot otherwise access such services. Their primary focus is to address the unmet legal needs of the community. Outreach clinics in the Waikato region.

Department of LabourDepartment of Labour The Department of Labour is a central government department delivering information and education about employment relations, health and safety, labour market knowledge and small business information, helping New Zealand access work related advice. The local office is situated in Hamilton.

Kiwi Life Group meets weekly, normally Friday 1-2.30pm (except school holidays). Free session to meet migrants, practice communication, build cultural knowledge and understanding of life in NZ. Free counselling sessions can be arranged through this collaborative project of HMS Trust and Te Awamutu Rosetown Counselling Centre.
