  • Powhiri for Refugee Arrivals at Kirikiroa Marae

    New refugee arrivals from Burma and Congro Brazaville will be received by Refugee Services Waikato and welcomed at the Kirikiriroa Marae on Friday, 24 February at 10 am.

    Antonio Gutierres, former Prime Minister of Portugal  and currently High Commissioner of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), who is on a state visit to New Zealand, will be in attendance. Aside from Refugee Services, national, regional and local representatives from government will also be in attendance.

  • WMRC Farewells SSNZ Coordinator

    The Waikato Migrant Resource Centre farewells Lucia Reijgersberg, SSNZ Coordinator on Tuesday, 21 February.

    Lucia, who has been in the role of SSNZ Coordinator since it was established in 2005 as a new project to bring a clear point of contact and consistent information to new migrants. Lucia Reijgersberg took on the role in Hamilton and has now held it for nearly seven years. During that time she has brought agencies together and enabled new migrants to the Hamilton area to access the information they need to settle successfully here. Her work has made a huge difference to the lives of many migrants. She has embraced her role with enthusiasm, efficiency and heartfelt sincerity. Lucia has worked tirelessly to build up strong relationships across the settlement sector and leaves the service in a very good place.

    Joris De Bres, Race Relations Commissioner, Human Rights Commission, has expressed his appreciation for her contribution to settlement and Race Relations in the region.

    We wish her well as she embarks on a new journey.
