The Waikato Migrant Resource Centre farewells Lucia Reijgersberg, SSNZ Coordinator on Tuesday, 21 February.
Lucia, who has been in the role of SSNZ Coordinator since it was established in 2005 as a new project to bring a clear point of contact and consistent information to new migrants. Lucia Reijgersberg took on the role in Hamilton and has now held it for nearly seven years. During that time she has brought agencies together and enabled new migrants to the Hamilton area to access the information they need to settle successfully here. Her work has made a huge difference to the lives of many migrants. She has embraced her role with enthusiasm, efficiency and heartfelt sincerity. Lucia has worked tirelessly to build up strong relationships across the settlement sector and leaves the service in a very good place.
Joris De Bres, Race Relations Commissioner, Human Rights Commission, has expressed his appreciation for her contribution to settlement and Race Relations in the region.
We wish her well as she embarks on a new journey.
Waitangai Day Celebrations at the Civic Square started with a whakatau at 7 am attended by ethnic community representatives.
This year's celebration was organised by Hamilton City Council, Te Runaga O Kirikiriroa and Te Pune Kokiri. The low key opening included a short message from Her Worship the Mayor as well as messages from Kreshnan Rengasamy, Tamil Society President and Dr. Rachel Simon-Kumar, School of Social Sciences, Waikato University. Both speakers talked about the importance of the Treaty and its role as a 'living document accommodating change' while people build relationships, acknowledging differences and respecting each other as Tangata Tiriti - people of the Treaty.
